Window films made to measure

Regardless of the type of premises: office or home, medical practice or art studio: exposure to high levels of direct sunlight can significantly reduce the utility value of buildings, even in the summer months. Overheated rooms often reduce the ability to work or sleep. Glare and mirror effects may have a long-lasting effect on visual activities and concentration. Besides, a permanent severe exposure to the sun damages furniture, wallpaper and carpets.

The installation of sun protection films is a cost-saving alternative to expensive mirror glasses, roller blinds or Venetian blinds in order to protect against high levels of sunlight.

It is important to remember that the darker the film, a higher percentage of harmful UV radiation is filtered and solar and heat protection improve. However, one must also consider: A darker film will darken the room.

Our medium silver sun protection film offers the ideal ratio between sun protection and light transmission.

Your Advantages:

  • Effective heat protection: A heat reduction of up to 86 percent reduces energy costs for air conditioning systems and fans and improves the indoor climate.
  • Highest UV protection: Only 1 percent of the harmful UV rays can pass through a high-quality sun protection film - a particularly effective protection against fading of furniture, paintings and other furnishing elements.
  • Avoidance of glare effects: Mirrored sun protection films reflect sunlight and reduce disturbing incidence of light on computer monitors and other screens.

In comparison to a reflective interior film, the clear advantage of a reflective exterior film lies in its heat-reducing effect: with an external film the heat radiation is already blocked in front of the window pane, so that less heat can enter into the interior room.

Important:

Not all glass types and window types are suitable for interior films. Roof windows or sloped glazing should only be covered from the outside. The same applies to thermal glazing, insulating windows or plexiglass surfaces.

The reason:
Sun protection films for indoor installation can only reflect and absorb solar radiation after they have passed through the outer window pane. Adhesion to glass types other than single or older double glazing leads to considerable heating of the space between the panes - up to thermal stress cracks.

Sun protection film & window film for indoor installation

Thermal protection - UV protection - Anti-glare protection - Privacy protection

The advantages of sun protection films for indoor installation are similar to those of external films: they offer effective heat protection, largely prevent the entry of harmful UV rays and avoid or reduce glare effects. Since they are not exposed to any weather effects, they are more durable than externally applied sun protection films.

Solar protection films for indoor installation are available in various shades. Dark films have a mirror effect, which not only provides protection from the sun but also from daylight. Thus, the interior of a building is additionally protected from prying eyes. Basically, strongly tinted films offer more heat protection than light-coloured ones, but due to their lower light transmission they lead to darker rooms on grey days.

How do solar protection films work?
Sun protection films consist of at least six layers and usually have a more or less strong mirror effect. They are available in a wide range of colours and shades.

The basic rule is: the darker the film, the higher the sun and heat protection. If the degree of tinting is particularly high, this is accompanied by reduced brightness on the inside of the building in cloudy weather and in the dark months of the year. The significant darkening effect, which only a few years ago meant that window panes covered with sun protection film hardly transmitted any light, is in the past nowadays - when high-quality, brighter tinted films are used.

An example: the medium-tinted silver sun protection film offers a strong heat rejection of 69 percent with simultaneous 99 percent UV protection and ensures the optimum ratio between sun and heat protection and light transmission.

Reflective effect for privacy
A further plus: sun protection films enhance the exterior appearance of a building when applied over large areas. The silver-coloured sun protection films attached to the exterior have a stronger mirror effect, improving the overall appearance of the exterior facade. At the same time, the mirror effect in daylight prevents prying eyes from looking inside a building. In darkness and rooms illuminated from the inside, however, the glass panels become transparent from the outside. With similar lighting conditions, the panes become transparent on both sides.

Sun protection film: one-for-all - simple self-assembly

Depending on the model, solar protection films for outdoor installation are suitable for flat and sloped window surfaces - whether large glass fronts or small roof hatches, thermal, overhead, gas-filled double glazing or other special glazing. These self-adhesive window films are mounted to the outside of the pane so that the sunlight is reflected immediately on impact. This avoids thermal stresses that could lead to glass breakage.

Frequently asked questions about window films:

What types of sun protection film are there?

On the one hand, a distinction is made between inside and outside films depending on the position of the desired installation. On the other hand, the reflective sun protection films are available in variously strong silver reflection from light to dark or in different coloured dark reflection (from one side) in bronze, copper, metallic blue or grey. Special light blue sun protection films with a slight mirror effect are a speciality.

Are all sun protection films suitable for my windows?

It is very important to find the appropriate solar control film for your glazing. Not all glass types and window types are suitable for interior films. Roof windows or sloped glazing should always only be covered with sun protection film from the outside. The same applies to thermal glazing, insulating windows or Plexiglas surfaces (there is also a special film type for these).

Can sun protection film be stuck to the window pane from the inside?

Solar control films for internal mounting reflect and absorb solar radiation only after it has penetrated the outer pane. When applied to glass types other than single or older (non-gas-filled) double glazing, this leads to considerable heating of the space between the panes - up to and including thermal stress cracks. Therefore, Sun protection films for interior bonding may only be installed on single glazing or (>25 years old) double glazing.

How much privacy protection do sun protection films offer?

Privacy protection is dependent on the tinting level of the sun protection film - the darkest and medium-thickness variants can provide privacy protection under certain conditions: the so-called mirror effect prevents curious glimpses into the interior of a room in daylight. In darkness and internally lit rooms, however, laminated panes become transparent from outside. With similar lighting, the panes become transparent on both sides.

How much heat is kept out?

You can achieve a heat reduction of up to 86 percent. Here, a distinction is also made between the modes of action of the darkest variant of an interior and an exterior film: with an exterior film, the heat radiation is already blocked in front of the window pane, so that less heat can already penetrate into the interior of the room. Thus, the sun protection film silver dark outside offers the highest heat reduction, thus reducing energy costs for air conditioners and fans and improving the indoor climate.

Does sun protection film offer the best heat protection from the outside?

The external sun protection film allows incoming sun rays to be reflected directly. This prevents heat build-up in the interior. The same applies to the absorption properties of the sun protection film. The sun's electromagnetic radiation is then not reflected but sucked in, so to speak. This can cause the window pane to heat up considerably. If the sun protection film is on the outside, the heat cannot warm up the interior.

Sun protection film outside or inside - which is more expensive?

The sun protection film for outdoor installation is definitely more expensive than the one for indoor installation. This is because it has a special hardcoat coating that makes it scratch-resistant. The surface consists of a very transparent acrylic layer that is much more resistant than the base material. This also makes it easier to clean the window panes, which are usually more heavily soiled from the outside. Although the films for indoor installation are cheaper, those for outdoor installation are the most effective in protecting against solar radiation.
