General Notes
All furniture films from Windowfilms can be installed by yourself without professional know-how. To ensure the installation of the self-adhesive film goes smoothly, we will tell you how it works here. We would also like to give you a few helpful tips and hints. The installation instructions for furniture film cover all steps from preparation to the finished project.
Installation Instructions – Step by Step
Prepare Your Tools
With every order of furniture film from our online shop, you will automatically receive a basic set from us. This includes a squeegee and a sharp utility knife. Please also have the following tools ready:
- Some cleaning supplies, consisting of a bucket, cleaning agent, sponge, cloth and, if necessary, a scraper.
- A sturdy ruler and a pen.
Create Space to Work
Depending on the size of the surface to be covered, we recommend taking appropriate precautions. If you want to cover your kitchen, for example, we advise you to take the following steps:
- Disassemble the individual cabinet doors or drawers. If necessary, store the contents of the drawers in another location to be able to work better.
- Remove all handles and hinges. Store the individual parts in a safe place and label them with crepe paper if necessary. This will save you the long search for the right parts afterwards.
- For covering a worktop, we advise you to remove all objects from it so that you can cover the surface in one go. If possible, also remove the strips to create a seamless transition.
Prepare the Surfaces to be Covered
For the result of the film installation to be very good, the surface must be cleaned very thoroughly. Proceed as follows:
- Clean the surfaces with appropriate cleaning agents.
- Remove dirt, dust and contamination completely.
- Stubborn contamination can be carefully removed with a scraper or a sharp blade.
- Loose substrates must be treated accordingly. For walls with porous material, a primer can help.
- Dents as well as deep scratches and notches should be repaired with a filler beforehand.
Caution: The surface to be covered must be smooth, firm and very clean, otherwise the furniture film either cannot adhere well or elevations caused by contamination will be clearly visible after covering.
The Right Film Cut
In our online shop you have the option of ordering self-adhesive furniture film according to individual measurements. If you have ordered the film by the metre, the film pieces still need to be cut correctly. And this is how it works:
- On the back of the film there are small squares measuring 10 cm². Use these as support when measuring.
- Place the ruler on top and run along the rail with a sharp utility knife. Using a ruler ensures a straight cut and stability.
Tip: Make sure the knife is really sharp. Dull blades can potentially tear and damage the film. If you use a utility knife, you can carefully remove the old blade segment if necessary.
Applying the Film Correctly
Now you can apply the furniture film to the surface:
- Peel off a small part of the backing film (about 10 to 15 centimetres).
- Stick this in the correct position and well aligned. If the position is not right the first time, you can pull the film off again and realign it.
- As soon as the film is positioned correctly, press the first part firmly with the squeegee. Remove any air bubbles between the film and the surface.
- Move the squeegee carefully from the inside to the outside to achieve the best results.
- Once the first part is installed, peel off the next piece of backing film and proceed as described above.
Our Tips for Easy Installation:
- When working on large surfaces, it is worth working in pairs. This will prevent unsightly creases in the film.
- Sometimes very small air holes can also be very stubborn. You can remove these by carefully pricking them with a needle or the tip of the knife. The film can then simply be pressed down. But be careful: this only works with very small holes and should not be done too often.
- Make sure the edge of the squeegee is very smooth. If it has notches or frays, these can also damage the surface of the film. In this case, the squeegee should definitely be replaced.
How to Work Corners and Edges
To be able to fold furniture film better, we recommend using a heat gun. A household hair dryer is perfectly sufficient for this. The heat from the dryer makes the film soft and elastic for a short time. Use this state to fold the adhesive film around the edges. Then go over it with a squeegee or your finger and press the film on.
Corners are first cut with a sharp knife at the converging points. Then there are two options:
- You cut the divided film individually and directly along the edge.
- You overlap the divided film along the edge, then carefully cut between both and remove the excess film.
Removing Film Residue
Excess film material can also be removed afterwards if necessary:
Place a sturdy ruler along the area to be removed. Then carefully run the knife along the rail. Be careful not to press too hard.
Reassemble, Clean and Finish
- Reattach all unscrewed parts and mount covered elements in the right place.
- Finally, you can wipe the film surface with a damp, soft cloth.
- Put all tools and utensils back in their usual place.
- Covered rooms and objects can be used again immediately after installation.
